What Is The Difference Between an Interim and a Full Service?

Discussing the difference between services and the importance of getting a car service can prolong the life of your car and make it more dependable.

In this article we will look at the difference between services and the importance of getting a car service. It not only helps to prolong the life of your car but most importantly it ensures your vehicle remains dependable and is safe to be on the road.

It can also highlight any issues that might cause a problem, so you can get them fixed. A regular car service increases the resale value of your car as it shows it has been well looked after. The checking of safety critical systems is necessary to keep them correctly working such as braking, suspension and lights.

So, which type of car service should I have?

There are two main types of car service available. These are interim and full (major), the intervals and types will be recommended by your manufacturer and are based on the age and mileage of your vehicle.

Manufacturers recommend getting your car service carried out every year, or around every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Some manufacturers recommendations differ to this, refer to your service schedule information for your vehicle to check this.

During a full (major) car service, a rigorous 108 Point Examination of the vehicle is carried out this includes oil and oil filter replacement, (using the correct recommended oil grade) air filter, fuel filter and pollen filter replacements are usually carried out on this type of service. We follow manufacturers interval change recommendations to determine this. On petrol models we check the recommended interval for changing spark plugs and advise on this. Modern day cars are usually fitted with long life spark plugs which have a longer interval change.

What checks do you carry out on my vehicle and why?

Brake fluid check

We check the fluid level, top up if necessary and perform a test on the quality of it too. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, which means it retains moisture from the cooling and heating process, hence why it should be replaced every 2-3 years, this is a separate maintenance item.

Anti-freeze coolant check

We check the level, top up if necessary and perform a test on the quality and strength of it too. Anti-freeze coolant ratio and quality is essential to protect your engine and cooling system all year round.

Windscreen washer fluid check

We top this up on your car service, an essential fluid needed to clean your windscreen all year round for essential visibility. This is especially important in the winter months when salt and grit from the roads cause a smeary, dirty windscreen and this reduces visibility.

Brake check

We visually inspect your vehicle brakes, checking components like the brake discs and pads for wear and efficiency. For your brakes to work efficiently the components need to be replaced when they wear out.

Power steering fluid level check

Keeping this system topped up is essential for the operation of the power steering system. Any leaks will have to be further investigated if you are having to top up more than usual.

Steering components check.

There are various parts associated with the vehicle steering system, these are checked for signs of wear or damage and any problems identified.

Suspension component check

Lots of different components are associated with your vehicle’s suspension system. These are checked for signs of wear or defects and any problems identified or advised.

Lights check.

All lights on your vehicle should work, we check for blown bulbs or identify and advise any issues with any light units.

Windscreen wiper check

These need to clear the windscreen effectively, a simple check on the condition of the wiper blades will determine if they need replacing. Worn wiper blades can damage the windscreen so this can be avoided.

Exhaust system

A visual check can identify any parts of the exhaust that has corroded, are broken/damaged or allowing the escape of exhaust gases.

Battery check

We test the battery to ensure it is correctly functioning and in good condition, identifying any potential problems. Batteries do have a shelf life and is one of the biggest causes of vehicle non-starting breakdowns, especially in the winter months.

Tyre tread and pressures.

Not only is it a legal requirement to have at least 1.6mm of tread across your tyres, they are an essential safety item, your crucial point of contact with the road. Worn tyres can be dangerous. Driving with under inflated tyres affects the handling of the car. Unevenly worn tyres can be a sign of another problem with your car associated with steering and suspension. We can help identify any issues.

We also check and advise on replacement intervals of essential maintenance items like timing belts, brake fluid changes, coolant system fluid changes and other systems that need maintaining. This list is not exhaustive but covers the main key areas.

During an interim car service, a rigorous examination of the vehicle is carried out this includes oil and oil filter replacement, (using the correct recommended oil grade) and where applicable the replacement of the pollen filter. Other car service checks* are carried out as explained above.

Whichever car service you have we always provide details of any advisory items that need to be addressed and on the day of your car service we will identify any repairs that need immediately completing.

Engine oil keeps components moving, replace it regularly to get the best performance.

Why do I need to get the engine oil changed regularly?

Engine oil keeps components within the engine moving with as little resistance as possible and needs to be replaced routinely to make sure you are getting the best performance from your vehicle. Making sure that your car’s oil gets changed regularly is key to keeping its engine running healthily for as long as possible. Deposits from the engine build up over time and this causes the oil to become inconsistent, sludgy and your oil filter to become clogged. There are also additives in oil to help your car engine, over time these decrease so it is essential to renew your oil and oil filter at the recommended intervals.
